Kalka city is the last city of Haryana on the northern side. This is also the last station for the broad gauge railways. Toy train route starts to Shimla after Kalka railway station. There is limited availability of Toy train during season time. Railways deploy the holiday special trains but can not cater to this demand for toy trains. Alternatively, tourist can travel by taxi or bus to Shimla.
There are many buses available coming from the side of Chandigarh to Shimla. You can get these buses from bus stoppage outside Kalka bus stand. Taxi and auto Rikhshaw are available outside Kalka railways station to Kalka bus stand. All the buses depart from Chandigarh go to Shimla via Kalka. You can get a bus to Shimla from Kalka but it would be hard to get a proper seat. You should get down at Chandigarh to get a seat on the bus. Buses to Shimla are available at ISBT sector 43 after every half an hour. Deluxe, Standard and Volvo buses are available from Chandigarh ISBT.
The total distance of this route is 90 kilometers from Kalka bus stand. It takes 2.5 to 3 hours to cover this distance. All travel between Kalka and Shimla is on the hilly area so vehicle may take a little more time to reach Shimla.
Kalka is very hot during the summers. There is no proper shelter on Shimla bus stop at Kalka Tourist should take buses from Chandigarh to get seat availability. Taxi is also available from Kalka taxi union office located exit gate of Kalka railways station.
