Chamba Travel Guide

Chamba, a famous mini town in Himachal Pradesh located at 3300 feet altitude above sea level. The town situated at convergence of River Sal and Ravi much visited by tourists. The town  decorated with Madar Shah hill in the background. It is renowned for its rich fauna and flora and also the remarkable architecture. Let’s get to know more about Chamba.

Chamba Weather

Chamba weather remains a bit higher side in Summers. However it is moderately hot in Feb and March. Weather remain cold and windy in winter and heavy woolen are required. During the months of March to June and December to February are the best months to visit Chamba. The former includes pleasant weather while the latter offers more snow and cold weather. Summer in the town is warm with hot mornings and cold nights. Do not visit Chamba during monsoon season which starts from July. December is ideal for snow-lovers. Don’t forget to bring heavy woolens clothes during winters.

How to get to Chamba

By Train

The town does not have its own railway station. Pathankot (120 KM away)  is the nearest railway head connected to the main cities of the nation. There are many train available from Jammu and Ambala to reach Pathankot.

By Road

Chamba is best travelled via roadways. Chamba is well connected with major roads of Himachal Pradesh. uses are available from Khajjiar (24 km), Dalhousie (56 km), Pathankot (118 km) and Gaggal (170 km) to Chamba. .

By Air

Gaggal airport is the closest airport for those who love to fly. Taxis and cabs are also available in Gaggal to Chamba. Flights are limited for this airport. It takes 5 hours to reach Chamba from Gaggal

The popular attractions in Chamba are KhajjiarLake, Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary, Chamunda Devi Temple, Chamera Dam, Manimahesh Lake, Bhuri Singh Museum, AkhandChandi Palace, Rang Mahal and many more. Let’s find out the top tourist attractions in Chamba.

Temples in Chamba

Chamba includes various ancient temples some of which are built during the period of 5th to 19th century AD. Some of the renowned temples in Chamba are Lakshmi Narain Temple, Sui Mata Temple, Temple of Vajreshwari, HariRai Temple, Chamunda Devi Temple, and Champavati Temple. Shikhara style of architecture is piece of historic article in this stone temples of Chamba. The intricate carvings of gods and goddess is a visual treat to history buffs.

Khajjiar

Khajjiar  is one of the most remarkable place in Himachal Pradesh. This place located 22 km away from Chamba. It is famous for Khajji lake located in the middle of meadow. The lake is bordered by snow-filled mountain ranges and cedar forest. February to April is the best time to visit the lake for its pleasant weather.

Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary

Kala top wild life sanctuary located 30 km away from Chamba. Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary is a 30.69 square km park which is located in the middle of the deodar forest.The park acts as the best spot forhiking. Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary houses wide range animal species like barking goral, deer, serow, leopard, jackal, langur, Himalayan black marten, bear, and so on.

Bhuri Singh Museum

Bhuri Singh Museum is an ancient museum . This museum built in the year of 1908. It includes more than 8500 antiques and relics like costumes, arms, coins, Basohli painting, rare Sharda script, royal jewellery, carved doors, frescoes, memorial stones, Guler-Kangra paintings,and musical instruments.

Akhand Chandi Palace

This is a historic attraction in Chamba built in the year between 1748 and 1764. The palace offers picturesque views of Chamunda Devi Temple, Lakshmi Narayan Temple, Sui Mata Temple, Rang Mahal and many more from its premises.

Trekking in Chamba

Chamba is a place from where a lot of trekking routes starts to Daladhar and Pir Panjal. Shepherds of Himachal Pradesh called Gaddi are familiar with these routes.
