Kullu travel guide

Kullu is a beautiful hill station located on the banks of Beas River in the state of Himachal Pradesh. This area is surrounded by lush green hills with pine and deodar forest. Kullu is ideal place for honeymooners, leisure travellers, and adventure seekers.

Trekking, skiing and white water rafting are the famous adventure sports in the region. Other than this, plenty of trekking trails can be found in Kullu ranging from novice to advanced.

Kullu Weather

Similar to other part of country, Kullu weather has three main season.

Summers

Summers starts from March to June in Kullu valley. During this season in Kullu,  flowers and vegetation get fresh colour and liveliness. Trekkers flock to Kullu to enjoy the journey of various routes during this period. As compared to other seasons, summer always remains the best time to visit Kullu.

Monsoon

Monsoon or rainy season falls from June end week of September in Kullu Valley. However, landslides during this period make it unsuitable for visiting. People visits Kullu to enjoy the green view of mountains in this season.

Winters 

The winters occur between December and February. If you love snowfall and winter games, you can visit Kullu during this period. Winter is also a good time for honeymoon couples.

How to reach Kullu

Kullu is well-connected by air, road, and rail. Here are the ways to reach Kullu:

By Air

Bhunter Airport is the major airport in Kullu. It is located at 10 km from the hill station of Kullu. Daily one flight from Delhi and Chandigarh are operated to Kullu. Once you reach the airport, you can hire a taxi or catch a bus to reach your destination at Kullu.

By Rail

Joginder Nagar is the nearest railway station to Kullu which is 100 km away. You can also take a train till Chandigarh railway station (265 Km).  Taxi to Kullu can be found from Chandigarh railways station. You can also travel by bus from Chandigarh to Kullu after reaching Chandigarh by train.

By Road

The easiest and most preferred way to travel to Kullu is by road. Kullu is well connected to the major cities of Himachal, Hariyana and Punjab.  Buses are available from Delhi, Chandigarh, Ambala, Pathankot, and Shimla.

Attractions in Kullu

Kullu has numerous attractions to check out. Let’s explore few of them.

Bijli Mahadev Temple (6 Kms)

Bijli Mahadev Temple is one of the renowned holy shrines in Kullu located at an altitude of 2460 m above the sea level. The temple is located at just 5.6 km away from the Kullu Bus Stand.

Lord Shiva is the main god in the temple. You need to cross the Beas River to reach the temple. The temple offers beautiful views of the Paravati and Kullu valley. You need to take a 3 km moderate to difficult trek uphill to reach the temple.

Bekhli Mata Temple ( 4 Kms)

Bekhli Mata temple located 4 km away from Kullu Town. Bekhli temple got its name because of  so many Bekhli trees surrounding the temple. This is the temple of Godess Jaganathi. Travellers can  reach the temple after  the trekking of 1.5 hour on a steep terrain. A spectacular view is their at the top of mountain near Bekhli temple.

Tirthan Valley (70 Kms)

Tirthan Valley offers panoramic views of stunning hills and rivers. The Tirthan River in this area is popular for angling activity.

There are trekking trails with waterfalls in the valley which attracts many trekkers to this place every year. Jalori Pass and Serloskar Lake are the two attractions in the valley which dazzles with breath-taking sceneries.

Gauri Shankar Temple (22 Kms)

Gauri Shankar Temple is one of the ancient temples of Kullu. You can find the temple below Naggar castle in Naggar Village.

The temple is located at just 22 km from the Kullu Bus Stand. This Shiva temple was built around 12th century AD. The temple is designed in Shikhara architecture.

Bhrigu Lake ( 57 Kms )

Bhrigu Lake is located towards the east of Rohtang Pass. The lake is great for trekking. The trekkers can enjoy amazing views of the pristine lake and mountains on the way of the trek.

Manali ( 39 Kms )

Manali is prime attraction located 39 km away from Kullu town. Travelers can see many spots including Hadimba Temple, Club House, Van Vihar, Tibetan monastery in Manali. Tourist can also plan their visit to Rohtang Pass from Manali 50 km on Manali Leh highway.

Chanderkhani Pass ( 47 Kms )

Chandarkhani Pass is a scenic region in Kullu located at an altitude of 3660 m above the sea level. The pass includes amazing trekking trails.

The breath-taking views and beautiful landscapes make it the most popular attraction in Kullu. The pass offers mesmerizing views of Deo Tibba Peak, Pir Panjal ranges, and Parbati mountain range.

Kullu Hand-looms

Kullu has a variety of hand-looms starts from basketry, Pullan  to Himachali cap. Pullan and Himachali cap is very famous in Kullu. Pullan is like a bed room slippers for indoor use. Himachali topi is traditional cap of Himachal Pradesh.

Kullu Shawls and Pattu

Kullu shawls are famous handwoven and elegantly designed fabric. These shawls are made of Merino wool, Angora wool or local sheet wool. Shawls woven for men are called Pattu in local language. Price of Kullu Shawl depends on design. Kullu Shawl price are ranges between INR 800 to 10000. Pattu are competitively cheap in prices as compared to Shawls. Pattu price starts from INR 400
