Palampur Travel Guide

Palampur is a scenic place known for its rich natural beauty. Palampur is situated in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. Popularly known as the “tea capital of northwest India,”. Palampur includes plenty of tea plantation sites.

The location is bordered by plains on one side and hills on the other side. The nature lovers can find solace and peace in the soothing environment of Palampur. Gliding and trekking should never be missed on a Palampur travel.

Palampur Weather

The mild temperate climate of Palampur makes it a year-round tourist destination in Himachal Pradesh. But, the best time to visit this place is during the summer from March to June. During summer, the daytime temperature rises to the maximum of 30 degrees Celsius and nights are colder.

It is better to avoid visiting during monsoon season between July and August. Second best time could be in winters, If you love snow.
Visit the place between September and early December.

How to Reach Palampur

Palampur can be easily reached by air, rail and road routes.

By Air

Gaggal airport is the nearest airport to Palampur. There are many flights from Delhi to this airport. It located 51 km away from Palampur.

By Train

The narrow gauge railway between Pathankot and Jogindernagar has various trains via Kangra. Nearest narrow gauge railways station is at Maranda. Maranda is 4 km away from Palampur town. Nearest broad gauge railways station is at Panthankot. Panthankot located at a distance of 125 km from Palampur town.

By Road

Travelling by road is the best way to reach Palampur. Plenty of government and private buses runs to Palampur from Pathankot, Chandigarh, Delhi or Manali . The travellers can also travel by their own vehicle. They can enjoy the scenic beauty of Palampur according to their comfort.

Palampur includes numerous attractions like Vindhyavasini temple, Bir Billing, Baijnath Temple, Dhauladhar National Park, Kangra Fort, Chamunda Devi, Neugal Khad, Tea Gardens, Bundla Stream, Andreta. Let’s explore the top attractions of Palampur.

Vindhyavasini temple (9 Kms)

Vindhyavasini temple located 9 kms away from the Palampur town. You you can reach the temple by hiking 6 km from village Badala. Height of the temple is about 6900 feet from the sea level. A lot of devotees visits this temple during Navtratri festival of Hindus.

Neugal Khad (2 kms)

The Neugal Khad is a famous picnic spot in Palampur. The outstanding view of the Dhauladhar mountain range can be admired from this place. There are various cafes in the surrounding areas which serves delicious foods and beverages.

Bir Billing ( 17 Km)

This spot located on a elevation of 1400 mts 13 kms away from Palampur.  Bir and Billing is two vilages, billing is 14 kms ahead 1000 mts higher from Bir. Both of these places are internationally known destinations for paragliding. Take off point for this paragliding at at Billing. A paragliding event for experienced para-glider organised here every year in October and December.

A Paragliding ride of 30 minutes costs 1500 INR to 2000 INR. If you want to shoot your ride a camera will cost Rs. 500 extra

Baijnath Temple ( 17 Km)

The Baijnath temple is one of the holy shrines in Kangra valley. It is devoted to Lord Shiva. Baijnath Temple is one out of the prominent ‘Twelve Jyotirlingams’. Shiva Vaidyanatha is the main God in this temple.

There is a unique sculpture of Ravana worshipping Shiva in this temple. This temple is also well known for Shivratri fair. Tourist can have a day trip to Baijnath temple from Palampur.

Dhauladhar National Park ( 13 Kms )

Dhauladhar National Park is a great place for animal lovers. This 12.5-hectare park located at an altitude of 1200 m above sea level. The picturesque views of Dhauladhar Mountain ranges and also the green valley can be enjoyed from this park.

Wildlife species like leopards, angora rabbits, Asiatic lion, sambhar, black bears, red fox, and wild deer are the residents of the park.

Kangra Fort ( 36 Kms)

Kangra Fort is located at a place where rivers Banganga and Manjhi meets. The marvelous architecture of the Fort makes it one of the most crowded historical monument. This fort is around 1000 years old. Fort can be reached hiring a auto rikshaw from bus stand of Kangra paying Rs. 100/-.

This fort has constructed by Nepali General Amar Singh Thapa from Nepali army. The real Rural of Kangra used to be the person owns this fort. It is worthy to have a day trip of Kangra fort from Palampur.

Chamunda Devi (26 kms)

The Chamunda Devi Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas in the world. The temple is devoted to the Goddess Durga, locally called as Chamunda Devi.

The temple is surrounded by serene hills. It is very famous Hindu shrine and people comes to visit this temple from all over India and world
